After years of testing my own agency services, outsourcing services, working for various marketing agencies both in-house and as a contractor, seeing old clients move on to bigger agencies, and even working on in-house SEO teams – I have a pretty good sense of whether or not an SEO team is selling you bullshit services or actually providing value to your company. These days I’m more interested in auditing an SEO team to see if they are the real deal then actually doing SEO work myself – this is the value my team and I bring to the table.

If you’re constantly ever-evaluating the money you are spending on SEO, then something is wrong. Good SEO speaks for itself and is hands-down one of the best marketing investments you can make. What I am not going to do is provide you with some 800 page report telling you that you are missing meta descriptions or that you need to “build more high DA links” – your agency or internal team should already know these things (unless of course you are starting from scratch, in which case we’ll hook you up to a proper SEO tool that can deliver these recommendations for you and we can assist in making sense of them.)

Instead, the core of my SEO auditing these days focuses on 2 key areas: UX and Competitive Analysis (Especially in the link department).

UX (User Experience): It’s now more in the open then it has been in previous years, but it’s no secret that Google wants to provide users with not only the best information for a user keyword query, but the best EXPERIENCES for it’s users – results that solve problems with as little friction as possible. How is the user experience for your website or landing pages? Is your website annoying to use? My team and I will look at a number of elements with real eyeballs and clicks as well as tools and analytics to determine how to make your content more user-friendly.

Completive Analysis: Do you even have a clue what your competitors link profiles look like? Are you blindly building “EEAT” without a clue as to how your competitors are ranking their sites? Spam is still rampant in SEO, even in big competitive verticals. Know that every SERP is different and what works for all the SEO gurus or news outlets touting SEO jargon on “how to do SEO in 2024”, that might not even be relevant to your niche.

Study the competitors, see and learn how they are ranking, whether it’s because of their content, technical SEO, or perhaps their backlink profile, and then put a strategy in place to do it BETTER – that’s how you do SEO.
